Yes, of course, but the alternative is missing a flight because of a traffic jam, a train breaking down, a busy day because a Trade Fair just ended, etc. So, I take a book, plan on getting a meal, and window shop. With the inauguration of the ESTA visa program, I have observed no real extra security for flights to the USA that I have been on. Years ago there were extra secondary checks at the gate that could be quite lengthy.
